Nantucket: Main Street Icon Returning in January

Lt. Max Wagner Fountain

It seems that the removal of the Lt. Max Wagner Memorial fountain at the foot of Main Street coincided with the start of the COVID pandemic on Nantucket.  It was 9 long months ago that someone drove into the fountain and it had to be removed and sent off-island for repairs. Volunteers from the Nantucket Garden Club have planted and watered the fountain for many years and did their best to make the makeshift replacement attractive this summer.  It also served as a central, and highly visible, location for the display of COVID information throughout the season.  The director of the DPW recently announced that the restored fountain will be back in January 2021, perhaps at the same time that we start to see some light at the end of the COVID tunnel.

Yesterday’s Island recently published an interesting article with some history about the Main Street fountain.  Before we know it the fountain will once again be sporting the yellow and green for Daffodil weekend.
