Fall Color on Nantucket

poison ivy

The final leaves of autumn are drifting to the ground, but if you look closely, you will see the most vibrant leaves of reds and oranges on the side of the roads and clinging to trees. Beware it is poison ivy! Despite the dreaded red rash, it does have some very positive uses.  The root system is very strong, making it an ideal plant for erosion control. The berries are loaded with protein, a real treat for birds in the winter and the leaves are a meal for certain animals on the island.
