Ferry Transportation to and From Nantucket

The Nantucket Approaching the islandThere are two boat lines that run from Hyannis to Nantucket.  The Hy-Line operates high-speed passenger boats that take about one hour.  There are 8 trips daily to and from the island during the summer schedule.  The Steamship Authority (SSA) runs the larger ferries that carry cars  and freight (6 trips daily) as well as the Iyanough, a high-speed passenger boat that runs 4 trips daily at this time.

As of this writing, reservations are highly recommended for any of the boats and face coverings are required on board and in waiting areas.  Both boat lines have been operating at lower passenger capacities due to COVID-19 to allow for physical distancing.  We have discovered that travel mid-day tends to be less crowded.  Last week the concession counters opened once again. There is no currently drive-on, drive-off service for cars going standby being offered by the SSA which means that one needs to stay with the vehicle until it gets on the boat.  Fingers crossed that this may change if restrictions get lifted.
