New Census Data in for Nantucket

Nantucket’s year-round population officially climbed to 10,172 people, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released Tuesday by Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin.

The official population estimate for the island, which Town Clerk Catherine Flanagan Stover believes is inaccurately low, represents a 6.85 percent increase over the last official Census Bureau population figure for Nantucket, which was 9,520 people, recorded during the 2000 census. The new official figure from the federal agency is far below the Town Clerk’s town census number, which as of March 9 stood at 11,519 people.
