Nantucket Voters Speak

From the I&M:  Nantucket voters approved a $100,000 operating override to fund mosquito control in Tuesday’s special town election, but turned down the other two overrides on the ballot, including Question 1, an effort to shift millions in debt on the island’s two sewer plants from rate payers to the tax base.

Question 2, which would have authorized spending over $500,000 to begin the takings and repairs of the notoriously bad Surfside area roads was the closest vote, but was similarly defeated with 696 islanders opposed to the spending, and 662 in favor. Of Nantucket’s 7,949 registered voters, 1,369 cast ballots Tuesday- a 17 percent turnout.
