Today around the island there were crowds of people flocking to examine the coastal homes of Nantucket to see what damage Hurricane Sandy really did. Some of the worst affected areas were Smith’s Point and Sheep Pond in Madaket. One home sat with pylons completely exposed and no access to the property. Another owner estimated he lost 18 feet of property. Water levels rose to above Millie’s Bridge and Smith’s Point was forced to evacuate.
Houses on the southwest facing shore were some of the most affected. Old wells and utility lines once buried feet underground were uncovered and on the beach shore.
