This chart compares the value of the average Nantucket house and vacant land to some of the major market indices and tracks value over the past decade.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is actually worth less than it was 10 years ago, having lost 19% of value. The DJIA declined from 12,100 to 9,774 since 2000. The NASDAQ is worth 14% less and the S&P 500 is down 23% since 2000. The average selling price of a house on Nantucket has increased 171% during the same time period and the selling price for vacant land on Nantucket has increased 246%. Of course, owning on Nantucket is about so much more than just an investment, but it is nice to know that our market has not been as volatile as some others during the past decade.
