Nantucket: Annual Town Meeting 2013

Nantucket has an annual Town Meeting form of government, giving the voters the power to decide what they think is best for our community.  Although there are over 8,000 registered voters on-island, Town Meeting is typically attended by fewer than 10%.  This year was particularly sparse with fewer than 400 voters showing up on the first night to decide the business of the island.  The optimistic way to interpret this is to assume that most people feel that those serving on the various boards and commissions for the Town are doing a fine job.  Another interpretation is that, in the absence of any hot button issues like a new rental tax or a windmill at the landfill, people are just too busy to participate.  Numerous zoning changes were passed both nights.  Town Meeting Roundup
