Affordable Housing on Nantucket

“Start where you are.  Use what you have.  Do what you can.”  ~ Arthur Ashe

Affordable housing on Nantucket??  This may seem like an oxymoron, but one of our favorite island non-profits is doing a great job providing safe, affordable housing solutions to island residents.

Housing Nantucket is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to create housing opportunities for the Nantucket community.  When year-round residents are able to establish roots on the island, the stability benefits the whole community.  Housing Nantucket’s affordable rental and home-ownership programs provide options for moderate income households who live here year-round.   Those served are our neighbors: health care professionals, Town employees, teachers, postal employees, non-profit staff, retail and service workers.  Singles, families and the elderly may all take advantage of Housing Nantucket’s programs.   Housing Nantucket also provides options for Nantucket property owners at-large.

Through the Covenant Program, lots that otherwise would be un-subdividable may be split, resulting in two lots with separate owners or a condominium with separate owners.  One of these lots may be sold at market rate with no restrictions, and one is sold at a permanently affordable price.  Please speak to a broker for further details.

Have land, need a dwelling?  Check the Relocatable Dwellings for Sale section of Housing Nantucket’s website.  This is the island’s go-to source for dwellings that have to potential to be relocated at the expense of a buyer.   Its 501(c)3 status allows Housing Nantucket to accept structurally sound dwellings as a tax-deduction from private donors, then sell them to raise funds to further the organization’s mission.  These dwellings are relocated and rehabilitated, saving wonderful structures from demolition as well as facilitating affordable housing.  Supporting this Nantucket-island staple is a win-win-win!
