Commission on DisAbility on Nantucket

Last weekend we were expecting the arrival of a lovely family for a week’s stay in Sconset.  One member of the family utilizes a wheelchair to get around.  Unfortunately, at the last minute, they learned that the ramp they needed to accommodate the entry of their rental home was too large to take on the plane.   At 4:00 on a Friday afternoon we reached out to the Nantucket Commission on Disability.

The Nantucket Commission on Disability represents and advocates for the needs and interests of the disabled community living on or visiting Nantucket Island.  It is the goal of the commission for the disabled population to fully integrate and participate in the Nantucket community. “Access for All” is the commission’s objective.

NCD certainly accomplished their objective in this case.  Despite being last minute, the commission’s facilitator, Brenda McDonough, had multiple ramps delivered and installed at 9:00 the next morning.  Brenda was kind, compassionate and competent; she also made sure to communicate with us at every step of the process.

Most of us don’t have to think about the special challenges faced by differently abled people.  Thankfully there are organizations like The Nantucket Commission on Disability to advocate for those with complex needs.
