Nantucket: What do jet fuel, Boars Head deli turkey and ferry reservations have in common?

Private JetYou can’t find any!  Earlier this spring we predicted that this would be the summer of lack of supply and huge demand.  Unsurprisingly, this is exactly what is happening on Nantucket.  The airport ran out of jet fuel for private planes (except for emergency reserves for medical transport) over the weekend and when 30,000 gallons arrived by boat on Monday an airport representative said, “this will be gone by this afternoon”.  The Stop and Shop shelves have been empty of Boars’ Head deli meats for at least a week and, of course, it is nearly impossible to get a ferry reservation for a vehicle on, or off, the island, until late September.  We offer this information not to complain but rather to illustrate the intensity of what is happening here right now.  Time will tell if the popularity of the island this summer is due to a post pandemic bump or if it is here to stay.  No matter what, we are still grateful to be able to live here and share the island with others who appreciate it as much as we do.
